Short Story on Helping Others for Kids (With Moral)

Arjun, a boy with a cricket bat on his back, stops beside an old man whose vegetable cart has a broken wheel, while Pip the firefly glows nearby

Here is a short story on helping others for kids, with its moral at the end. It takes about 3 minutes to read and suits children in class 1 to 5.

🏏 Late for the Match

Arjun was ten, and he was the best batter on his street’s cricket team. On Saturday afternoon, the big match was about to start. He grabbed his bat and ran.

“Hurry, Arjun!” his friend Kabir shouted from the end of the road. “We start in five minutes!”

🛞 The Broken Cart

Halfway there, Arjun heard a loud crack! An old man selling vegetables had hit a pothole. One wheel of his cart snapped, and tomatoes, onions and potatoes rolled all over the road.

People walked past. A car honked. The old man bent down slowly, trying to pick everything up with shaking hands.

Arjun looked at the old man. He looked down the road towards the match. Then he put down his bat.

🤝 Helping Hands

“Let me help you, Uncle,” said Arjun. He gathered every tomato and onion into the baskets. Then he ran to the bicycle shop at the corner and came back with the owner and a spare wheel.

Together, they fixed the cart. It took half an hour. By the time Arjun reached the ground, the first innings were over. His team was losing.

“Where were you?” Kabir groaned.

When Arjun explained, Kabir was quiet for a moment. Then he said, “You’re still batting next. Go!”

🏆 A Surprise at the Match

Arjun batted well, but his team still lost by five runs. He walked home feeling a little sad.

The next morning, there was a knock on the door. It was the old vegetable seller, holding a big bag of the reddest tomatoes and the sweetest mangoes. “For the boy who stopped when everyone else walked past,” he said to Arjun’s mother.

That evening, Arjun’s whole cricket team came over to eat mangoes. “We lost the match,” Kabir said, grinning, “but you won something better.”

💡 Moral of the Story
