Short Story on Kindness for Kids (With Moral)

Here is a short story on kindness for kids, with its moral at the end. It takes about 3 minutes to read and suits children in class 1 to 5.

🏫 The New Boy

On the first day of term, a new boy joined Anya’s class. His name was Leo. His family had just moved from far away, and he spoke very quietly, looking at his shoes.

At lunchtime, everyone ran to their usual groups. Leo sat alone under the big neem tree at the edge of the playground, eating slowly.

Anya noticed. She was about to join her friends at the swings. She stopped.

🍎 One Small Thing

Anya walked over to the tree. “Can I sit here?” she asked.

Leo looked up, surprised, and nodded.

She sat down and opened her lunch box. “My grandma makes the best apple slices,” she said. “Want one?”

Leo took a slice. Then, very shyly, he opened his own box. “My mum made these,” he said. They were little round sweets Anya had never seen before. They were delicious.

The next day, Anya sat with Leo again. This time, two of her friends came too. By the end of the week, Leo was laughing and teaching everyone a clapping game from his old school.

🤕 The Broken Arm

A month later, Anya fell off the swings and broke her arm. It was her writing arm. She came to school with a big white cast, feeling sad and worried. How would she write her notes? How would she carry her bag?

When she reached her desk, she found a surprise. Leo had copied the morning’s notes for her in his neatest handwriting. Her friends had drawn smiley faces all over her cast. And every day that week, someone carried her bag up the stairs.

“Why are you all doing this?” Anya asked.

Leo smiled. “Because on my first day, you sat with me when nobody else did.”

🌳 The Kindness Tree

Their teacher heard the story and had an idea. She put a big paper tree on the classroom wall. Every time someone did something kind, they added a paper leaf with their name on it.

By the end of the year, the tree was so full of leaves that you could not see the branches.

💡 Moral of the Story
