Short Story on Gratitude for Kids (With Moral)

Here is a short story on gratitude for kids, with its moral at the end. It takes about 3 minutes to read and suits children in class 1 to 5.

😠 Lily the Grumbler

Lily was eight, and she grumbled about everything.

Breakfast was “boring”. The school bus was “too slow”. Her shoes were “the wrong colour”. When it rained, she grumbled about the rain. When it was sunny, she grumbled that it was too hot.

One weekend, Lily went to stay with Grandpa. Even there, she grumbled. “Your house has no video games. The garden is too big. The soup is too hot.”

Grandpa just listened and smiled.

🪨 The Thank-You Stone

That evening, Grandpa took Lily to the river. He picked up a small, smooth grey stone and put it in her hand.

“This is a thank-you stone,” he said. “Keep it in your pocket. Every time you touch it, you must think of one thing you are thankful for. Just one.”

Lily rolled her eyes. “That’s silly, Grandpa.”

“Maybe,” said Grandpa. “Try it for one week.”

🌤️ One Thing a Day

The next morning, Lily put her hand in her pocket and felt the stone. One thing, she thought grumpily. Fine. I’m thankful… for the warm blanket.

At lunch, she touched the stone again. I’m thankful for Grandpa’s soup. It’s actually tasty.

At school on Monday: I’m thankful for my friend Priya, who saved me a seat. On the slow bus: I’m thankful the bus driver waits for me when I’m late.

Something strange began to happen. The more things she noticed, the more she found. Birds singing. Her mother’s hug. A good book. Her day seemed brighter.

💌 Lily’s Letter

At the end of the week, Lily wrote a letter to Grandpa.

Dear Grandpa, the stone isn’t silly. I found 47 things to be thankful for this week. Number 1 is you. Love, Lily.

Grandpa put the letter on his fridge, where he could see it every day. And Lily kept the thank-you stone in her pocket for years.
